Biographical Note

The Women's Section is one of the ANC components for change for the establishment of a fair and impartial society in South Africa, based on the principles of a unitary, non-sexist, and democratic order. Given the history of colonialism and apartheid in South Africa, black women were particularly marginalized from the mainstream of educational, economic and political affairs of the country. It was as a result of these and other problems that a common consciousness grew among the women to articulate and fight for their rights. The women at SOMAFCO formed part of this struggle. Under the umbrella of the ANC, women were in a better position to voice their opposition to the apartheid system. The SOMAFCO women organized themselves into various units where college issues of a political nature were discussed. The older generation imparted to the young mothers years of their experience in the struggle and assisted them with the day-to-day problems they faced.

<arrangement encodinganalog="351$b" id="a5">

Arrangement

The Correspondence series spans the years 1970-1991. The letters document women events and activities at the college and internationally. There were many ways women were involved not internal political and social activities, but also in association with women in other parts of the world on common issues. This is clearly in the next series of the Subject Files.

The Subject Files series spans the years 1970-1991. Most of the files carry international platforms from which the ANC Women's Section members interacted and collaborated with other women worldwide in exchanging information and sharing ideas on matters that affect women in various ways. For an example, files on conferences, women organizations of other countries serve as a demonstration for the above. Also through reports, research, papers, minutes and so on summarizes active political functions women were engaged in.
