SOMAFCO SOMAFCO Nursery School Records 1973-1990 .2 linear metre The ANC Nursery School was started in October 1980 in Morogoro in renovated garage. It began with 18 children and 8 staff members. There was only one classroom, which made proper organization of activities difficult. On 18th May 1981, the Nursery School moved into renovated premises in Mazimbu, which were shared with the Primary School. The ANC Nursery School was started in October 1980 in Morogoro in renovated garage. It began with 18 children and 8 staff members. There was only one classroom, which made proper organization of activities difficult. On 18th May 1981, the Nursery School moved into renovated premises in Mazimbu, which were shared with the Primary School. There were 4 rooms for the Nursery School as well as shared facilities: common room, kitchen, toilets and playground. This was a move for the better then; though later this became inadequate as the number of children increased. The teaching staff was drawn from the ANC (Mpho, Nonkululeko Gqabi and Thandie Mthembu) and volunteers (Fieke, Martins and Jutte) from abroad. As the struggle escalated in South Africa and more leaving the country into exile, there were more challenges the Nursery School was faced with: the growth of children's population and the shortage of teachers. New facilities were put in place to cope with such challenges: additional accommodation for the children and the recruitment of more staff members.

Scope and Contents

The SOMAFCO Nursery School is composed of .2 linear metres and one series: Subject Files. It spans the years 1973-1990. This series reflects affairs that were affecting the lives of the children of the ANC members. These were children born in exile and those who came from South Africa with their parents. Some of these children were left into the care of the College while their parents were out in missions of the ANC or had no parents because of atrocities caused to them by the Apartheid regime. However, the series contains the information about ways and means that these young people were looked after by the College authorities.
