History
Walter Sisulu was born at Engcobo in the Transkei on 18 May 1912. He received his early education at various missionary schools. During 1928-29 he worked as a labourer in a dairy and then in the mines, where he became face to face with appalling working and living conditions of the black workers. In 1930 left Transkei for Johannesburg. Upon arrival he became involved in civic associations and in 1940 joined the African National Congress. Mr. Sisulu was first active in the ANC Youth League, working with Anton lembede, Oliver Tambo, Govan Mbeki, Nelson Mandela and others. It was during Sisulu’s era that the Youth League met to discuss the strategy and tactics of the ANC aimed at bringing about radical change in South Africa. In 1949 he was elected to the National Executive Committee of the ANC and its General Secretary. Together with other ANC leaders, Sisulu took part in the Defiance Campaign against unjust laws in 1952. In 1956 Walter Sisulu, together with 155 other national leaders was arrested and charged with High Treason for his part in the organising of the Congress of the People. All the accused, including Walter Sisulu, were found not guilty and released in 1961. In 1960, a State of Emergency was declared and the ANC and other anti-apartheid organisations were declared illegal. Thus, Walter Sisulu and others went underground to continue the struggle. He became a founder member of Umkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the Nation), the military wing of the ANC, and was its first commissar. In 1963, the underground leadership of the ANC, including Walter Sisulu, was arrested at their Headquarters in Revonia, charged with sedition and sabotage and sentenced in 1964 to life imprisonment on Robben Island. Walter Sisulu and other Revonia prisoners were transferred to Pollsmoor Prison in 1982. He was finally and unconditionally released in 1989.
In 1991, Walter Sisulu was elected to the Deputy Presidency of the ANC, an act, which served as a fitting tribute to him for more than fifty years; he spent participating in the struggle against the apartheid system. It was an indication that the ANC, and indeed that the oppressed majority needed a continual support from the veteran to the finalisation of the struggle. Thus, this aim had borne fruit, when this veteran stood fit and tall to experience this objective with the first ever Democratic Elections, which occurred in 1994. It is befitting also that Walter Sisulu like others had retired from active politics to pave way for new generation to take the way forward from the old generation.
Unfortunately, but naturally, Walter Sisulu passed away on 5 May 2003. He was 90 years old. Walter Sisulu was one the generation of South Africans who selflessly of themselves for the emancipation of the oppressed and, ultimately freedom of all the people of South Africa. He bequeaths much to an SA sorely in the need of moral rectitude and self-restraint that characterised his life of struggle. Together with Nelson Mandela, he led resistance to minority rule for almost five decades, in addition to helping form the ANC Youth League and was one of the generations of young militants who steered the ANC from the “futile” politics of petitions and protest to an armed struggle, and later to negotiations that heralded a new dawn of democracy in South Africa.
