Though the
Some files focus on specifically North American events, such as the Mandela
Tours of 1990 and 1993. Also available are records of the
The records are arranged in eleven series: Administrative, Correspondence, Fundraising, Individuals, Mandela Tours, Missions, Organizations, Photographs, Subject Files.
The Administrative Series I (0.52 linear meters) deals with business matters of the mission including the filing of important organisation-wide articles such as speeches by key leaders, notes by committees such as the Constitutional Committee, and crucial defining documents such as the Freedom Charter, the Harare Declaration, and the ANC Programme of Action. Events, public statements, policy guidelines and miscellaneous business matters are also available in this series. This series has some overlap with the Subject Files series and researchers are advised to consult both series for certain topics.
The Correspondence Series II (0.18 linear meters) includes correspondence with some celebrities with ties to the ANC, contact between the home office in Lusaka and the Washington Mission, and, the most prevalent topic, logistical planning on the administration of funding, travel for members, and arrangement of high level event planning, such as the visits by Mandela in 1990 and 1993. Further material on these visits can be found in the series Mandela Tours.
The Fundraising Series III (0.05 linear meters) is arranged according to the organisation providing the funding. Documentation primarily consists of letters to and from the donors, and occasionally includes letters of introduction or brief background on the ANC to encourage support.
The Individuals Series IV (0.22 linear meters) varies widely from individuals central to the ANC such as Nelson Mandela and Chris Hani to relatively remote individuals worldwide whose connection to the movement is more distant, such as North American celebrities Stevie Wonder and Spike Lee. All varieties of material occur here, including some photographs, contracts, handwritten letters of support, and faxes notifying members of upcoming meetings.
The Mandela Tours Series V (0.15 linear meters) is divided into two
sub-series named for the years in which the tours took place. Two major trips
to the
The Missions Series VI (0.03 linear meters) is dedicated to the
materials of ANC offices distributed around the globe. Largely represented are
interactions from American agencies, companies, and social groups, and
universities inviting chief representative Mabuza to a variety of speaking
engagement invitations, conferring various honors on ANC leaders, and seeking
advice and research assistance from the ANC through the
Organizations Series VII (0.30 linear meters).
Representing a wide variety of organisations, this series
deals primarily with those organisations that dealt directly with the ANC
itself, and therefore have through the process of ordinary business passed papers
of their own offices to the
The Photographs Series VIII (0.03 linear meters) contains a variety
of photographs of people and places related to the anti-apartheid cause,
ranging from posed portraits of the most famous ANC members to candid snapshots
of
Subject Files Series IX (1.43 linear meters). A broad representation of countries, conferences, and third party (usually ANC) writings on various organisations (as opposed to papers directly passed from organisations to the ANC during regular communication and business, which occur in the Organisations series.) The Subject Files span a wide array of topics ranging from South African topics to American issues. Material in this series often overlaps with documentation in the earlier series.
