History

Following the banning of the African National Congress (ANC) as an illegal organization in April 1960, the ANC operated underground.  The ANC functioned internally as an underground organization and externally as an overseas organization.  Oliver Tambo was sent overseas as the ANC acting president general and head of the external mission.  External missions were opened in London, Accra, Cairo, and Dar-es-Salaam.  Eventually the ANC had offices and representatives in 27 countries by 1990.

The external missions worked to win support for the overthrow of apartheid by promoting the cause of the ANC and urging international economic pressure against the South African government.

The ANC mission in Sweden enjoyed cooperation from the Swedish government.  In the 1970s Sweden began to pursue unilateral sanctions against the South African government.  Trade, investment, and technology transfer between Sweden and South Africa were discouraged.  Olaf Palme, the Swedish Prime Minister, was a supporter of the ANC causes and worked closely with Oliver Tambo.  Palme was assassinated in 1986.  The ANC worked closely with Swedish organizations such as the Scandinavian Institute of African Studies and the Swedish Social Democratic Party.

Lindiwe Mabuza was the ANC’s chief representative in the Sweden Mission.  The mission also served as the Scandinavian mission, serving several other Scandinavian countries for a time.  Billy Modise eventually succeeded Mabuza.

Tambo recovered from a stroke in 1990 and spent four months in Sweden recuperating before returning from exile.

Scope and Content Note

The records of the ANC mission in Sweden detail the administration of the mission and efforts to win international support for sanctions against the South African government.  Documentation includes background material on Apartheid and South Africa as well as international organizations involved in efforts to abolish Apartheid.

The records are arranged in six series:  Correspondence, Newspaper Clippings, Photographs, Posters, Publications, and Subject Files.

The Correspondence series consists of 0.6 linear meters (two large boxes) of records, including general correspondence between the Sweden Mission and other branches of the ANC, organisations in Sweden and South Africa, governmental departments in both countries, and foreign embassies.

The Newspaper Clippings series consists of 0.6 linear meters (two large boxes) of newspaper articles in both English and Swedish, covering a wide range of issues concerning activists, organisations and socio-political issues related to South Africa and anti-Apartheid movements.  Article dates range from 1958 to 1992.

The Photographs series consists of 1.5 linear meters (five large boxes) of materials from both Sweden and South Africa and includes photographs of prominent anti-Apartheid leaders, organisations and events, including the Amandla cultural group.

The Posters series consists of 0.6 linear meters (two large boxes) of miscellaneous posters, including those related to protests, boycotts, and sanctions against South Africa as well as posters relating to issues such as nuclear disarmament.

The Publications series consists of 5.67 linear meters (63 small boxes) of periodicals and publications collected by the Sweden Mission over a range of approximately forty years.  The majority of materials are periodicals from the 1980s and early 1990s related to South African, socialist, and democratic issues.

The Subject Files series consists of 7.5 linear meters (25 large boxes) and provides in-depth accounts and records of a wide variety of topics, including profiles and speeches of prominent anti-Apartheid leaders, organisations related to anti-Apartheid, political and labour movements in southern Africa, international conferences, branches of the ANC such as the Youth League and Women’s League, and pivotal events in the struggle against Apartheid.
