History
Following the banning of the
African National Congress (ANC) as an illegal organization in April 1960, the
ANC operated underground. The ANC
functioned internally as an underground organization and externally as an
overseas organization. Oliver Tambo was
sent overseas as the ANC acting president general and head of the external
mission. External missions were opened
in
The external missions worked to win support for the overthrow of apartheid by promoting the cause of the ANC and urging international economic pressure against the South African government.

The seven series in this
collection, Correspondence, Diaries, Newsclippings, Photographs,

The Correspondence series, which spans from 1980 until 1993, primarily records the relationship between the ANC and individuals, institutions and governments. A majority of the correspondence is letters and faxes received by the office. Posted by a diverse population, ranging from school children to NGOs and embassy representatives, these messages demonstrate the international support for the ANC’s cause. The correspondence is arranged alphabetically by folder.
The Diaries series includes various types of chronicles, such as appointment books, guest books, and a book of condolences. A majority of the appointment books are spartan in the amount of information the provide on the office. However, one or two of the earlier planners provides a higher level of insight than the later ones. The guest book, like the daily logs, provides a sparse list of those who visited the mission. Of a higher informational value is the book of condolences, which relates to the death of ANC leader and UN representative Johnny Makatini. These messages of sympathy are evidence of the global reputation the ANC maintained.
The Newsclippings series documents the South African media’s reporting
on both the ANC and Apartheid. It also
includes press releases of the
The Photographs series pertain less to the particular international
focus of the
The Publications series consists of pamphlets, bulletins, reports, and
journals that are demonstrative of the ANC’s interests. A majority of the series consists of compiled
press clippings from both major international newspapers and South African
newspapers, published in a brochure. The
miscellaneous boxes contain published material both from the ANC and other
organizations, which cover issues related to
The Subject Fields series is arranged alphabetically and spans the
years 1973- 1994. These files, which contain reports, some correspondence,
programs, and speeches, document the mission’s aims to sensitise the
international community on Apartheid and move it to action. It particularly
emphasizes the mission’s drive for human resources, finances, and materials.
Also highlighted in these files are the minutes from meetings and reports
regarding the particular role of the
The United Nations’ Documents series consists mostly of UN publications
from various committees, such as the Centre Against
Apartheid and the Intergovernmental Group to Monitor the Oil Embargo on
